• Chungyuan Festival (Ghost Festival)

  • Overview:The seventh lunar month also marks "Ghost Month" in Taiwan. It is said that the underworld gates open during this time and all the ghosts will return to the world of the living. On the 15th in this month, every temple in Taiwan will host a banquet ceremony for the dead. Feeding the hungry ghosts and appeasing them is a very important custom in this month.

People offer food and vegetables to their ancestors during the Ghost Month. Incense and paper money are also burned and offered to wandering ghosts so nobody goes poor in the afterlife. From the 1st day of the seventh lunar month to the 29th day of that month, everyone prays for safety and trouble-free month from the spirits. Temples all over the island hosts prayers and ceremonies for this purpose. The height of these activities peak on the 15th, on Chungyuan Festival. The Keelung Chungyuan Festival, Chiang-gu in Toucheng, Yilan and Hengchun, Pingtung are all important folk ceremonies for this period.
